We Deliver: New Job, New Ideas

Holy cow! Where did the month of September go??? I’d intented to do something for my birthday, but that week went flashing by. Meant to do more regular posts in general, but obviously I dropped the ball there. Or maybe it got washed out with all the blasted rain. Fifty inches in September alone, my friends. Fifty. Inches. That’s taller than most of the kids at the school where I sub.

Speaking of subbing (nice segue, yeah? ; ) I’ve been doing quite a bit. Not only at school, but as a UPS delivery person. Yep, we have UPS here in our little hamlet by the sea.Amazing, I know. But don’t send FedEx because that stops in Anchor-town for us and gets send to the regular post office eventually. Key word: Eventually : P Anyhoo, yes, I’m the substitute/helper-outer-er for our local UPS delivery lady. No, I don’t wear the brown gear, unless you mean my Xtra-Tuff rubber boots.

Rural package delivery is fun in a place with very few road signs and even fewer houses with numbers on them. I drive past my target a lot and generally feel lost, but I’m learning to put names, faces and locations together. That’s the beauty of a small town. Sooner or later you will get to know just about everyone and where they live or work. Or close enough. The regular delivery lady, Ann, gives me directions like, “It’s the blue house on the right after the bridge. Don’t go to the first door, go to the second. If no one is home, leave it in the old cooler beside the porch.”

So while I was driving around alone for the first time, looking for some mythical residence Ann swore was there, I came up with an idea for a story. I’m thinking rural driver sees something she shouldn’t. Or keeps delivering mysterious packages to a place that never seems to see human occupancy. Or some combination there of.

Is it any wonder that’s where my mind goes? No. No it’s not.

After spending some time flailing about remote neighborhoods, can I ask you fine folks to do something? Please display your house number somewhere on your home. I’m getting Husband to do that soon. And if you want a delivery person to just drop a package if you’re not home, make sure there’s a nice cold drink in that cooler ; )
